You Made It Possible

The monthly missions offering in June, sent to the JESUS Film Project, was $316.

Results of July’s Tools and Blankets offering, a project of the United Methodist Women, are reported elsewhere in this issue.

WBUMC continues to support the food pantry of Community Action of Orleans County. A box of foodstuffs is delivered almost every week. (Several additional boxfuls were brought in following April’s family night dinner. Two representatives of the Food Pantry attended, spoke, answered many questions, and showed a video.) Containers are at both doorways. We encourage you to consult the bulletin each week and to follow the suggestions for useful contributions. This is a United Methodist Women project.

Worship At The Villages

Pastor Jack is scheduled to lead the weekly worship service at The Villages of Orleans County on Sunday, September 19th at 2:00 p.m. This will be the fourth in a series of eight services for which he has volunteered leadership in 2010. Members of our congregation are invited to join in the worship, and he especially welcomes those who are willing to provide music, to lead in prayer, to read the Scriptures, etc. Please speak to him, if you can help any month.

Senior Luncheon Series

Will Return In September

This year’s second round of ten Senior Luncheons is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 13th at Noon in the church office. The series will conclude with luncheon on November 15th. Wilma Richardson, who directs our Senior Adult ministries, has charge of the meal. But she will be counting on several of the attendees to volunteer leadership at one or more of the luncheons. Pastor Jack will provide the devotional moments and the song service. The lunch menu varies, from week to week, and a freewill offering helps with the expenses. Both men and women are invited. Watch the bulletin for further details or see/call Wilma (589-2373).

Fall Schedule Just Ahead

Our Sunday School (with classes for all ages and a variety of adult classes) will be reactivated on September12th.

Classes begin at 9:30 a.m. Our teachers, workers and other Christian education staff members will be installed in the 10:30 a.m. service of worship, also on September 12th.

Congratulations!

Danny William Shuler, III was born to Janelle and Danny, Jr. at Rochester’s Highland Hospital on July 31st. He weighed in at 8 pounds 13 ounces.

Bring-A-Friend-Or Relative”

Brunch Set For September 26th

The Church Council has selected Sunday, September 26th as the date for our next Hospitality Brunch. They urge you to plan ahead, then invite friends and family members who are not now attending church here or elsewhere to join you at worship (10:30 a.m.) and to be our guest(s) for brunch in the fellowship hall after worship. There will be no Coffee Hour.

This is a whole-church activity that will require everyone’s

participation, and will be well worth the effort. Sign-up sheets for food dishes and for workers will circulate on Sundays beginning September 5th.

The Villages Introduces

Transitional Care Program

The Villages of Orleans County has expanded its 50-year-old long term care services to include transitional care. The program is intended to meet the needs of individuals requiring aggressive 5-6 day a week therapy outside of the hospital setting, a service not offered within the community until now.

Posters and flyers describing the new service may be found on our bulletin boards at WBUMC or by calling the office of Jeffrey M. Glatz, administrator, at 585-589-3238.

Wilma Richardson hopes to have a spokesperson from The Villages as our guest to talk about the program at one of the September/November senior luncheons. Keep tuned!

September Missions Offering

Will Help Ship Christmas Boxes

The monthly missions offering this month will help with the shipping costs ($7.00 per box) of this year’s Christmas shoeboxes. A portion of this summer’s Vacation Bible School offering was also directed to this purpose. These two sources, then, determine the number of shoeboxes which we’ll be able to send, this year.

In October, the congregation will be invited to prepare and pay the shipping for a box or boxes. The committee will offer sturdy, plastic boxes, free of charge. We generally distribute fifty or so. But the bulk of our shipment is comprised of boxes prepared by the Missions Committee. This month’s offering, added to the VBS collection, will determine how many boxes the committee will be able to pack.

Whatever the total, ours will join some eight million others which will be sent to children living in desperate and frequently dangerous circumstances in about 100 nations. Rev. Franklin Graham’s Operation Christmas Child is a project of his Samaritan’s Purse ministry.

Contributions will be welcome any time in September. They should be earmarked, “Shoeboxes.”

Worship In September

“Christ is King” is always our September theme. Apart from Communion Sunday’s white, the sanctuary will be decked in green. Kingdomtide continues through Thanksgiving.

The Old Testament lessons will all be the words of Jeremiah. The New Testament lessons in September (except for the first week) will be from 1 Timothy. The Gospel lessons in September consist of readings from Luke 14-16. See the Lay Readers Schedule in this issue for particulars.

Our summertime, 9:30 a.m. worship hour extends through the Labor Day weekend. Rev. David Phelps will be our Guest Minister that morning, September 5th, with Holy Communion offered in the pews.

Roberta Call will be our preacher in the very busy September 12th morning service, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. The service will include the Installation of our Christian education staff (Sunday School resumes that morning). Grandparents with their grandkids will be photographed in celebration of Grandparents Day.

Our monthly Membership Anniversary Remembrance is set for Sunday the 19th.

There will be a brunch following the service on September 26th. See the related article in this issue. Here is a great opportunity to bring a friend or relative who is in need of a church home.

UNY Annual Conference Stats

As we have been reporting, four conferences, including the Western New York Annual Conference, were merged in June

to form the Upper New York Annual Conference (virtually the whole state apart from the New York City area). The new entity contains 942 churches, with a combined membership of 189,000, divided into 12 districts (ours is called the Genesee Valley District) under Resident Bishop Marcus Matthews, who will reside in Baldwinsville.

Church Conference November 13th

District Superintendent Ted Anderson has confirmed the date of our annual church conference for Saturday, November 13th. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. He’ll meet with the Staff/Pastor Parish Committee at 6:30 p.m., and the business session will begin at 7:00 p.m. Details will follow; but the date is firm, and we urge all members and friends to be on hand for this most important gathering.

And Now, Face Book!

WBUMC is now on Face Book. Check us out by searching for West Barre United Methodist Church and then hitting, “Like.” Once you “Like” the page you can post to the site (this includes pictures and videos, as well). You will also receive notices from Face Book when someone posts new content to our site, but only if you “Like” this page. Happy Face Booking! Hope to see you there soon. This is a great way for those living at a distance from us to keep in touch!

Animal Adventure Day Trip

Coming Up September 18th

The Hospitality Team invites you to come along to their September Day Trip, an Animal Adventure Day at Hidden Valley in Varysburg.

Hidden Valley tour leaders say, “Join us for a leisurely guided tour along the scenic wildlife drive. Experience an exciting afternoon being introduced to addax, wildebeest, and 30 other exotic residents. Find out about the animal collection. The tour offers an educational experience you won’t soon forget.”

Come one, come all! Please invite family and friends to this event. It sounds like fun! The tour is about one hour long in the park’s special, open air trucks. You’ll receive a cup of grain to feed the animals! If we have 25 or more in our group, we’ll get our own guided tour. So sign up soon. All are welcome. Money is due at the time of sign-up, by September 9th.

Ticket prices: Adults, $15.00; Children (3-10), $11.00; Younger Children, free. Senior discounts do not apply on Saturdays.

Our caravan will depart the church at 11:30 a.m. Lunch plans are yet to be firmed. Keep tuned through the church bulletin and the web site.

THE JESUS EXPEDITION

Exploring the Miracles of Jesus

This year, out Pre-K through 6th graders went around the world exploring the Miracles of Jesus. Our travels and Bible stories confirmed that Jesus performed amazing miracles proving his sincerity, and that he is truly our Savior, has power over death, deserves our thanks, rewards persistence and is our true provider in all things. At each of our locations, we listened to a story relating one of the many miracles performed by Jesus. Our Itinerary, lessons, verses, and Bible points were:

ANTARCTICA: The paralyzed man and his four friends. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” [Isaiah 1:18]. Jesus is the Savior.

EGYPTIAN DESERT: Jairus’s daughter rising from death. “For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” [1 Corinthians 15:22]. Jesus has power over death.

BRAZILIAN JUNGLE: Healing of the 10 lepers. “You are my God, and I will give you thanks; you are my God, and I will exalt you.” [Psalm 118:28]. Jesus deserves our thanks.

MOUNT EVEREST: Jesus restores Bartimaeus’s sight. Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” [Hebrews 12:1]. Jesus rewards persistence.

PACIFIC OCEAN: Jesus provides a coin in a fish’s mouth. “But in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” [Philippians 4:6]. Jesus is our provider.

Each evening opened with a skit relating to the destination and the telling of the Bible story. Our characters were “unique” to say the least and were an entertaining start to our evenings. We had our murals hanging in the Church on Sunday, August 15th so that the congregation could experience part of our VBS tour.

This year, our Teen and Adult class leaders chose their own curriculum and discussion points. The teens discussed areas of prayer and communication with God, words are important /not using unwholesome words, building others up by listening to their needs that it may benefit those who listen and those who are in need, accepting Jesus as Savior, and sharing the wonders of Jesus. The Adult class curriculum followed a Philip Yancey series "The Bible Jesus Read." The Leaders took the approach that if Jesus had gone to VBS, he would be studying these Scriptures, with specific lessons on Job, Moses, Psalms, Ecclesiastes, and Prophets.

The average nightly attendance for our Pre-K through Adult classes was approximately 50 individuals. Each class earned nightly points for attendance, memorization of the night’s Bible Verse, bringing a friend, and bringing their Bible. Our 4th – 6th grade class and 7th – 12th grade classes shared the winnings of the point competition this year.

The annual free will offering competition between the “Boys and Girls” was won by the “Girls” this year. The proceeds collected from all involved will be apportioned for our Mission Projects – (1) Orleans County Hospice; and (2) our annual pledge to West Barre’s Operation Christmas Child to help with the mailing costs of the Shoe Box packages. The offering totaled $517.00.

Our volunteers are many and dedicated. They are the ones who truly make the week a success and bring the children back the following year. Our many, THANKS to our teachers, assistants, actors, cooks, and prep/clean-up teams. We could not do it without you. All who attended VBS experienced a wonderful week because of you. Remember, Jesus is our Savior with Power over Death; he rewards persistence, is our provider and deserves our Thanks by Prayer and living by example.

You Made It Possible

May’s monthly missions offering, sent to Care Net Center of Orleans County, reached $495.

Pastor Jack is scheduled to lead the weekly worship service at The Villages of Orleans County on Sunday, August 15th at 2:00 p.m. This will be the third in a series of eight (third Sunday in May/June, August/September, November/December) for which he has volunteered leadership in 2010. Members of our congregation are invited to join in the worship, and he especially welcomes those who are willing to provide music, to lead in prayer, to read the Scriptures, etc. Please speak to him, if you can help any month.

Senior Luncheon Series

Will Return In September

Average attendance at the recent round of ten, weekly senior luncheons was just about ten, with a low of six present at the first gathering and a high of twelve. Mostly women, they gathered on Mondays at noon for luncheon, devotions and socializing. Wilma Richardson, who organizes the 10-week series each spring and again in the fall, has been sidelined from hands-on activity by abdominal surgery (from which she is nicely recovering). Several ladies rotated the chores of planning, preparation and clean-up, while Donna Bartholf decorated the tables each week. The series is scheduled to resume the Monday following Labor Day and to continue well into November.

Summer Schedule

Sunday School will be in summer recess beginning with June 27th. Classes will resume on the Sunday following Labor Day. The worship service will be held at 9:30 a.m. beginning with Sunday, July 4 and continuing through September 5. We’ll use our summertime songbooks, Great Gospel Hymns, throughout these weeks. Nursery Care and Churchtime Activities will continue to be provided.

Worship In July And August

The church calendar lists these weeks as Ordinary Time, indicating that there are no special observances. The sanctuary is decked in green (except for Communion Sundays’ white), calling attention to the growth that the Holy Spirit prompts in our midst.

The New Testament lesson on July 4 concludes a series of readings from Galatians. The following week, and continuing through the first week of August, we shall hear passages from Paul’s letter to the Colossians. During the remaining weeks of August, attention will turn to the mighty “faith” chapters of Hebrews, chapters 11-13. The gospel

readings all during this period will be sequential readings from Luke, chapters 10-14. See the Lay Readers chart in this issue for specifics. Both the New Testament and the gospel readings are confined; Colossians is a brief letter easily understood, and we are dealing with just five chapters of Luke and four chapters of Hebrews in a two-month period. Why not plan to read these passages again and again, this summer?

Great Gospel Hymns will again be our summertime songbook. The hour of worship will be 9:30 a.m. throughout both July and August.

The Supper will be served in the pews on Sunday, July 4, when we’ll observe Freedom Sunday. Our hymns and prayers will ask God’s blessings upon our nation and will thank Him for the measure of freedom that is our heritage.

On either the 11th or the 18th (watch the bulletin!) we’ll celebrate United Methodist Men Sunday, introducing the band’s newly-elected slate of officers and sharing with the congregation the kinds of activities that the men have been undertaking in their second year of organization.

Chad Baker will preach the Word of God in the service on July 25th. Details of his message will be in the bulletin soon. Vicki Kuipers will be at the organ, that morning.

Holy Communion will be offered by Intinction on Sunday, August 1st. The service on August 8th will include the installation of our Vacaton Bible School staff. Our monthly Membership Anniversary Remembrances are scheduled for the third Sunday of each month, July 18th and August 15th. See elsewhere this issue for the names of the celebrants.

Pastor Jack is scheduled to lead worship at The Villages of Orleans County on Sunday, August 15th at 2:00 p.m. He invites to you join the residents for the 30-minute service, and he is eager to hear from those who can contribute music or who would like to lead in prayer, read the Scriptures, etc.

Don’t Miss Out On Our Day Trips!

The Hospitality team has organized and promoted a number of day trips, in the last few months, to provide us with enjoyable opportunities to spend time together and to get acquainted with folks we don’t know well. On Friday, July 9th we’ll meet at the church at 6:00 p.m.and drive to Batavia for a Muckdogs game at 7:05 p.m. We’ll sit in box seats, and we’ll enjoy fireworks after the game. DeAnn Corke is the person to talk to about tickets. But hurry!

United Methodist Men

Officers Announced

The United Methodist Men of West Barre, now in their second year of organization, announce the following list of officers who were duely elected at the May meeting:: Jim Peglow, President; Milton Unger, Vice President; Jean Depatie, Secretary; Roger Chandler, Treasurer. The body unanimously elected Ray Willis as Founding President, in recognition of Ray’s initiative in organizing the West Barre chapter and his early leadership. Ray asked to be relieved of the presidency because he and Lucille spend a significant portion of the year in Florida.

The UMM meet on the fourth Monday night of each month at 7:00 p.m., at a site announced through the church bulletin.

About Our Summer Missions Offerings

There will be no monthly missions offering in July, in deference to the United Methodist Women-supported Blankets and Tools offering. Literature and envelopes will be distributed at the beginning of July and will be available throughout the month. The Committee on Missions encourages the congregation’s hearty support of this annual event.

The monthly missions offering in August will, for the second year, support Nothing But Nets, a United Methodist Advance Special which provides insecticide-treated bed nets for African children living in malaria-infested locales where mosquitoes often kill more people than HIV/AIDS. The UMC was singled out by the World Health Organization leaders to spearhead this ministry. Nets cost ten dollars each. Please earmark your check or offering envelope from the pew rack, “Nets.”
